Are thinking that your model will have the same programmable selections for the smoke setting - P0 - P9? I have one of the newer 225's that has that feature now on the front of the thermostat (a little button you push with a small paper clip or small screwdriver) where I think it used to be on the back - now you can change it at any time depending on if your goal is temp or smoke.... Just wondering if you are retaining that programmable feature or adding to it or is it simply a temperature setting?

Thanks

That's an interesting thought on playing with the fan. I've played with quite a few of the P settings on mine and you definitely sacrafice temp for more smoke. I read another post out there where a guys it concentrating on smoke the first 30-45 mintues then just bumping it up to 225 after that and it sounds like he's getting good smoke ring/flavor following that technique.

Looking forward to following the development! Just another thought as I was grilling yesterday and a storm rolled through - better make sure it's sealed and won't get damaged by water!

I know what you mean, but it is not very possible. The problem is basic combustion. As you get to the higher temp the firepot needs to burn stronger to generate enough BTU to heat the cooker. The stronger fire will create less smoke.

The smoke setting allows the fire to be closer to a smolder rather than a full flame, however for anything over 180, your really need a good flame going.

I am going to experiment a bit with kicking the fan off and on to generate more smoke at higher temps, however the temp swings will be much greater.

I just joined up to follow the development as this seems really cool and looking forward to it!!!!

In your tests - how has the smoke control been as I wish I could get warmer temps (225 on a colder day) on the smoke setting but with similar amounts of smoke when it's on the smoke setting! Thanks and good luck!

Somewhat. I have the flexibility now to run some tests to prove or disprove this.

Right now I am running with some fan control and have temps within 5 degrees.

However, with a constant fan and some more predictive algorithms of when to add pellets, a constant fan may work the same, who knows!

Is this where you find the most challenge in making the unit perform the way you want? I would think this would be the key to stabil temps.
